November SNAP Benefits Halted

With each day it persists, the federal government shutdown is affecting Rhode Islanders. Here’s what we know.

Nearly 143,000 Rhode Islanders will not receive their November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) food assistance benefit on November 1st, and won’t receive this assistance again until the government reopens.

Currently, the average SNAP benefit is $6.69 per person, per day. That amounts to a loss of nearly $1 million in food assistance for Rhode Islanders per day.

An additional 27,000 federal employees in the state may be impacted by a loss of wages due to the shutdown. Many of these folks have never been on SNAP, and will visit a food pantry for the very first time.

• IMPORTANT: Rhode Islanders who receive SNAP benefits should not expect to see their normal SNAP funds for the month of November loaded onto their EBT cards on November 1st.

• While select households with children may receive half of their normal SNAP monthly benefit on November 1st, the majority of households in Rhode Island will NOT see their EBT balances replenished on November 1.

• Despite news of a court order ruling the presidential administration to pay SNAP benefits as soon as possible, this situation is still unfolding. Even if this is approved, SNAP benefits will still be delayed and not available on November 1st.

• If you received October SNAP benefits, any unused funds on your EBT card will roll over and continue to be available in November.

• You can check your EBT balance by visiting ebtedge.com or calling 1-888-979-9939.
