Continued Impacts of the Shutdown
The government is open, but the effects of the closure will linger. Here’s what we know.
- On November 1st, nearly 143,00 Rhode Islanders didn’t receive their normal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit.
- As of this week, measures to reopen the government have passed and all Rhode Island SNAP recipients have received their benefits.
- But for many, including 26,000 federal workers in Rhode Island who went over a month without pay, the impacts of the shutdown will be felt for some time.
- Even upon reopening, states will still need time to interpret and implement other facets of the HR1 bill, including cuts to SNAP, more stringent eligibility requirements, increased healthcare costs and more.

Give Help
Given the disruption to SNAP food assistance benefits and federal employees and contractors having gone without paychecks for an extended period of time, the RI Food Bank’s 137 member agencies around the state are seeing more people in their lines than ever and our current food acquisition budget can’t meet the demand.
In this time of emergency, if you have the capacity to give, we need your help. We’re asking our community to pitch in now so that we can support our neighbors in this time of crisis—for as long as it persists and beyond—as the impacts will be long-lasting.
