Ed and Joyce Jankowski: Finding Ways to Help Others

A desire to be closer to family brought Joyce and Ed Jankowski to Rhode Island in the late ’90s. Putting “anchors down” meant caring for the community through his work as housing director for the Newport Naval Station.

After losing his beloved partner of 25 years in 2007 and heeding her wish to “find ways to help others,” Ed took action.

To help neighbors who are unable to purchase enough healthy food for their families, Ed became a Sustainers Harvest monthly donor. His commitment deepened in 2014 when he updated his estate plan to include the Food Bank as a beneficiary.

“In executing Joyce’s wishes, I found an easy way, through my portfolio, to identify the Food Bank as a beneficiary,” Ed says. “Along with making the monthly donation, I wanted to ensure something was in place to continue contributing to the Food Bank after I’m gone.”

The Ed and Joyce Jankowski Fund will be created as a sub-fund of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank Endowment Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation with proceeds from Ed’s non-qualified annuity when he passes.

The Food Bank’s mission—to improve the quality of life for all Rhode Islanders and to advance solutions to the problems of hunger was the single most important consideration in Ed’s decision to make a planned gift.

“Once I learned more about the organization, helping to achieve this mission honors Joyce’s request and fulfills our shared wish to help others,” he says.
