Thank You for Learning About Hunger!
1. Over the past few years, has the need for food assistance increased or decreased?
Increased
The need for food assistance has increased dramatically in recent years. Demand for food assistance reached a record high over the last 12 months. Through our statewide network of 147 member agencies, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank served 50% more people than before the pandemic.
2. How many households in Rhode Island struggle with not being able to afford enough food?
One-third of Rhode Island Households
Nearly one-third of Rhode Island households struggle with not being able to afford enough food. High food prices continue to take a toll on both low-income and moderate-income families in Rhode Island, many who are struggling for the first time. According to findings from the 2023 RI Life Index 29% of households report that they cannot afford adequate food for their families. The number is even higher for households with children – 38%.
3. How many pounds of food did the Food Bank distribute in the last twelve months?
18.3 million pounds
The Food Bank distributed a record 18.3 million pounds of food in FY24, up from 16.2 million pounds the previous year.
4. The Food Bank distributes a variety of shelf-stable foods, fresh produce, dairy and meat items as well as culturally relevant foods.
True
The Food Bank distributes a mix of shelf stable items, fresh produce, dairy, meat and culturally relevant foods. A variety of healthy foods are critical to good nutrition. But a lack of diverse food choices makes it difficult for people to find healthy foods that reflect their cultural preferences. The Food Bank has addressed these needs by providing more culturally responsive foods to agencies in our network.
Now more than ever, the Food Bank needs support from friends like you to help feed hungry families.
Please help us provide healthy food to Rhode Islanders facing hunger. By making a generous donation today, you can help end hunger and feed hope. Every $1 you give helps provide nutritious meals for someone facing hunger.
Thank you!
