The Rhode Island Community Food Bank works with local supermarkets to obtain healthy, core products such as produce, dairy and protein.

Fresh Rescue

Fresh Rescue is the Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s non-shelf-stable food acquisition program. Through this program the Food Bank is able to obtain healthy, core product from local supermarkets.

The program initially began in February of 2004 with 6 of Rhode Island’s Stop and Shop Supermarkets donating frozen, last-date-of-sale meats. Because of the success of the program, by December of 2004 there were twenty-two stores participating.  In the wake of the program’s success, Shaw’s Supermarkets more recently joined the Fresh Rescue effort, donating product from eleven area stores.

In the past twelve months, the Food Bank has been the recipient of nearly 100,000 pounds of protein rich product, including beef, pork and poultry.  Common items received also include pre-cooked foods and deli items.
