Women Ending Hunger

Overview

Women Ending Hunger, a volunteer group of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, works to create long-term solutions to the problem of hunger. This initiative brings together a diverse group of concerned women who commit their time, talent and resources to advocate for change.

Under the leadership of Tracey Cugno and Food Bank Board Member Mary Flynn, Women Ending Hunger works on many issues, including nutrition education and SNAP (food stamp) outreach, as well as educating members and advocating around hunger issues. In past years, Women Ending Hunger members have:

-  Helped Food Bank staff in preparing for fundraising events.
-  Assisted Food Bank staff and gathering data for the Feeding America Hunger Study.
-  Contributed time to make the process of applying for food stamps more straightforward and accessible by providing local libraries with the necessary information.
-  Created Common $ense Cooking, a 12-episode cooking series on PBS, which taught viewers how to prepare well-balanced and nutritious meals on a limited budget.

Current Projects

Women Ending Hunger has taken on many new and exciting projects this year. These projects include:

- Bringing Witnesses to Hunger, a traveling photographic exhibit to Rhode Island.  This exhibit features photos taken by 40 women living in poverty in Philadelphia and powerfully depicts the issue of hunger.
- Creating, marketing and selling a reusable shopping bag to raise awareness about hunger, and funds for the Food Bank.
- Continued advocacy around childhood nutrition and school meal programs.
